PROVIDING SMALLHOLDER FARMERS WITH ACCESS TO CONSISTENT RELIABLE MARKETS DRIVES ECONOMIC ACTIVITY IN RURAL AREAS

ABOUT THE SDU

With support from the Mastercard Foundation, AgDevCo has created a Smallholder Development Unit (SDU) to connect our investees to hundreds of thousands of smallholder farmers.

Well-managed outgrower schemes provide farmers with access to training, agricultural inputs and a market for their production at fair prices.

Recognising that there are high set-up costs and economies of scale in smallholder outgrower schemes, the SDU provides up to $500,000 of matching grant funding per project to help establish, expand and deepen linkages with farmers. Funds can be used to:

  • Conduct feasibility studies and define core components of an outgrower scheme
  • Implement and scale outgrower schemes, funding initial set-up and operational costs
  • Establish demonstration plots and training programmes to promote adoption of good agricultural practices
  • Develop information technology systems to manage smallholder schemes and track their impacts

PROJECT OPPORTUNITIES

AgDevCo’s SDU is actively seeking project opportunities in seven target countries – Ghana, Malawi, Mozambique, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

Key selection criteria are:

  • a commercial business case for working with thousands of smallholder farmers
  • a commitment to monitoring and reporting on the benefits delivered to smallholder farmers
  • openness to improving the efficiency and effectiveness of outgrower schemes through the use of new technologies
  • financial sustainability of the outgrower scheme beyond SDU grant funding
  • demonstrable commitment to the highest standards of corporate governance and financial management

Important note: the SDU is available to all agribusinesses in the listed countries who meet the above criteria. Eligibility is not restricted to AgDevCo investee companies.
