SDU role

The SDU team is working with SFA to expand its buying and extension teams and establish formal, transparent relationships with the local union, which represents over 3,500 local rice growers. Through better engagement with the union and banks, together with training of lead farmers, SFA’s rice procurement process is becoming more efficient. Combined with better agronomic techniques, such as double cropping, SFA’S volume and quality of rice sourced from existing and new smallholders are set to improve significantly.

Smart investment and support
Supporting self-sufficiency
Despite strong rice yields, over 70% of Senegal’s rice demand is fulfilled from imports, and domestic production continues to lag consumption. The Senegalese government is addressing this imbalance by setting domestic production goals and import caps to improve the country’s rice self-sufficiency. Taking advantage of these positive market dynamics, SFA is aiming to double its processing capacity by 2021 and requires an increased, reliable supply of good quality rice.
