SDU role

The SDU budget is being used to help SRL increase sustainably-sourced cattle and grains (sunflower and maize) from around 8,000 smallholder farmers in the local community by supporting outgrower operational running costs. This expansion is required for SRL to meet its three-year strategic growth plan and will become a centralised hub in the area, driving significant impact on smallholders up to 100km away from its main operations.

Smart investment and support
Accessing markets
Through its complementary Silverlands Livestock Improvement Community Program, SRL is creating a stable and accessible market for grain surplus and by-products by using them in cattle feed. This provides a strong market for cash crops, such as sunflower, that are more drought resistant than traditional maize and that improve farmer resilience. Initiatives are also underway to facilitate cattle farmers’ access to local markets by expanding feedlots, cattle dipping and veterinary services.
