Our social impact

RDI employed 35 staff in 2017 and 1,595 traders and sellers benefitted from the downstream value chain.
Lift in income
In 2017, employees received an annual uplift in income of $1,154 while the value created for all sellers was c.$36,000.
Food security
RDI is located in Sussundenga where there are only two producers of litchis. RDI has the highest production in this area and it plays a significant role in substituting imports and making litchis available in the market at lower prices than imported fruit. Moreover, RDI has been bringing forward activities such as pruning and fertilisation in order to ensure an early crop. As a result, litchi yields have increased.
The company received GlobalGap certification, leading to more sustainable access to lucrative export markets and higher revenues. Because of different weather conditions, RDI’s litchis comes to the market at a time when producers in Manica and Catandica cannot produce litchis and, therefore, without RDI there would not be local litchis available in the market for 3/4 weeks. Many of the sellers are women who tend to have large family responsibilities and are often single. RDI is ensuring these women have the chance to access a high-value fruit in a period in which litchis would not be otherwise available.
The Challenges

RDI is a litchi and avocado farm in Sussundenga, Manica province that has 20 ha of litchi under commercial management and is used as a benchmark to develop the litchi sector in the region. The first avocado test block demonstrated that avocadoes in Mozambique can be harvested earlier than in South Africa.

Our Approach

AgDevCo is providing the patient capital needed to establish the fruit orchards. It committed $802k in equity and a shareholder loan to finance the commercial operating costs and to develop fully mature orchards. A further $90,000 was provided as a local currency working capital loan.

Our Impact
  • RDI’s improvements in litchi yield are being used in training sessions provided to litchi smallholders in Catandica and Macate.
  • 114 MT of its litchis exported to Europe in 2017 (24 MT more than last year).
  • First avocados exported in 2017.
  • RDI’s litchis supply allows street sellers to significantly increase their daily income in periods of shortages.
