Food security

Outgrowers are given technical advice. Through a JV with NCBA Clusa; Agro-dealers receive help to market seeds and establish demo sites, which teach improved crop management and conservation farming practices.
The Challenges

Phoenix Seeds is a processing, packaging and marketing company located in Vanduzi-Manica. In the past, nearly all smallholders were constrained by low productivity due to poor quality self-produced seed bought and sold informally. The government and NGOs have struggled to help smallholders with the required quantity of certified seeds. Phoenix seeds was established in 2010 as the first Mozambican seed company to both produce and register seed with the aim of providing access to good quality seed at affordable prices to Mozambican farmers.

Our Approach

AgDevCo, on behalf of the BAGC, has invested in equity and also provided shareholder loans worth $707k to support this high-profile project in the Mozambican agricultural sector. AgDevCo has enabled seed production to be expanded from 71 ha to 142 ha in 2014/2015 and a processing facility to be constructed.  With two seats on the Board, AgDevCo also provides important strategic and operational support to the management team, and has raised $800k of interest-free financing from the Africa Enterprise Challenge Fund.
