UPLIFT IN INCOME
Through the mechanisation programme 1,056 jobs (237 full-time) have been generated in rural areas with high unemployment. Income uplift for employees was $791 in 2016. 91 ‘Agropreneurs’ directly financed by AgDevCo received an income uplift of $6,916.
Food security
FOOD SECURITY
By rotating maize, soya and cotton, food production reached 1,670t, sold in local markets. Cotton is expected to be sold to export markets via NWK.
Community
IMPROVED COMMUNITIES
Cotton exports will generate foreign currency and income for rural communities. Neighbouring farmers have benefited from the provision of tractor services. Farmers have improved access to a market for soya, maize and cotton.
Real lives
Alick Moolabala, NWK AGROPRENEURS, Zambia
Through AgDevCo’s investment and a mechanisation package financed by banks, Alick has a tractor, ripper, planter and trailer. He can now plant a larger area, rotate his maize and cotton crops and gain additional income by preparing other farmers’ fields and providing transport services to both NWK and the local community.
"I CAN PREPARE MY LAND MORE EFFICIENTLY AND GAIN ADDITIONAL INCOME BY DOING SO FOR OTHERS IN THE COMMUNITY."
Overview
The Challenges

Small-scale farmers lack access to finance to grow their business and improve productivity. Banks are reluctant to lend working capital to them as they usually lack a credit history.  The challenge is to demonstrate to banks that working capital loans to emergent farmers can be profitable and secure, and can help farmers develop a credit history to facilitate future financing.

Our Approach

NWK, a leading Zambian agri-business, provides inputs on credit financed by AgDevCo to the Agropreneur through retail shops in addition to offering a guaranteed market for crops. When the farmer sells his or her crop to NWK, the outstanding balance is cleared. Default risks are reduced through extension, farmer monitoring and crop insurance. Due to input financing from AgDevCo alongside asset financing from 3rd party lenders, the Agropreneurs programme grew dramatically in 2015. 91 Agropreneurs received finance from AgDevCo in the 2015/16 season.
