Overview
The Challenges

NZAH is an ambitious project that will catalyse commercial agriculture in Zambia’s remote northern region. NZAH’s objective is to establish an irrigated farm, bulk storage and processing hub that will produce food crops and livestock to improve livelihoods in this targeted area.

Our Approach

AgDevCo is the lead developer of the project to establish several nucleus farms with extensive ingrower and outgrower schemes. The Phase 1 pre-feasibility work was completed in 2014. The follow-on Phases 2 and 3, consisting of feasibility studies, community consultations and project implementation were completed at the end of 2015. As a result of this work, AgDevCo established two nucleus farms specialising in seed, investing $5.5m in Saise Farm and $6.9m in Katito Farm. AgDevCo continues to explore opportunities in the NZAH region targeted at both local and export markets.

Our Impact
  • $625 annual uplift in farmer income expected.
  • Regional export of grains to countries with a high risk of food insecurity. Estimated contribution to regional trade of $10m.
  • Improved quality of smallholder livestock owing to better feedstock.
  • Community benefits from improved infrastructure, service provision, transport and agri-businesses.
  • Development of an estimated 2,350ha of irrigation.
  • Development of an estimated 32,000t of storage and processing capacity.
  • Feasibility work and investor engagement resulted in establishment of a potato seed farm.
