SDU role

Shea nuts are gathered by women in northern Ghana, who traditionally process them in a time-consuming and inefficient process before making them into shea butter or soap. Mother Shea’s management team has identified processing efficiencies and, together with SDU support, is investing in small-scale processing technologies to improve the quantity and quality of shea nuts. This will enable female smallholder growers to attain organic and Fair Trade certification and improve their income potential.

Smart investment and support
Targeted activities
SDU support is focused on targeted value chain efficiency initiatives. These range from testing shea nut drying and par-boiling techniques to generating unique, traceable codes from pickers to the end consumer, which enhance quality control, reduce shrinkage and ensure that high-performing pickers are rewarded fairly. Initiatives are implemented and evaluated on a test pilot basis before being rolled out in order to maximise project value.
