Overview
The Challenges

Katito is the ‘hub farm’ of the Northern Zambia Agricultural Hub (NZAH), an ambitious project that will catalyse investment into commercial agriculture in Zambia’s remote Northern region. This region has experienced a lack of investment due to its remote location and lack of infrastructure. However, developments on the ground are positive with significant interest from commercial investors.

Our Approach

AgDevCo is the lead investor and developer of Katito Farm partnering with two other shareholders. Katito is being developed in stages. Approval for the first two stages has been obtained and includes production of seed maize, commercial maize and seed potatoes. Seed potatoes will be produced under irrigation as an outgrower for Saise Farm.

Our Impact
  • $36 annual uplift in farmer income expected through the use of hybrid maize seed.
  • Regional export of improved seed and commodities to countries with a high risk of food insecurity.
  • Community benefit from jobs, on-the job-training and security of tenure. 137 FTE jobs created in 2017.
  • Initial development of 600 ha of cropping.
  • Import substitution of seed potatoes.
