IMPROVED LIVELIHOODS

Ilobezi purchases cattle almost exclusively from traditional farmers and although the industry is male-dominated, we expect more female participation due to work related to the sunflowers.

Community
IMPROVED COMMUNITIES
Improved access to market, improved seed and better genetics from bull exchange program. Quality bulls received by Ilobezi are swapped for lower quality bulls/steers, introducing better genetics to suppliers’ herds.

Overview
The Challenges

Zambia’s Southern Province is historically drought prone (relative to the country). It is also home to the majority of Zambia’s cattle. The national cattle herd is estimated at between 2.73 and 3.14 million animals with 80% of these kept under traditional management systems. Cattle and other livestock provide a significant income source for many rural communities.  In addition to cattle, Ilobezi purchases smallholder sunflower to meet its feed needs providing a market for an alternate drought-resistant crop.

Our Approach

AgDevCo’s investment shall provide a market for traditional cattle in even the most remote parts of Zambia’s Southern Province. In addition to purchasing cattle, AgDevCo’s investment will enable Ilobezi to pay a premium for better quality cattle and reduce the cost of access to market by paying for the transport of animals to the feedlot. The investment provides a market for 1,650t of sunflower seed. Sunflower seed is estimated to have a gross margin of $160/ha.

Our Impact
  • Ilobezi purchased 4,896 head of traditional cattle in 2016.
  • Ilobezi supplied 435kg of sunflower seed on credit to in the 2016/2017 season.
  • 100ha of maize has been planted for silage of which 30ha is intended to be irrigated.

  • Capital leveraged includes $94k from sponsor.
