IMPROVED LIVELIHOODS

Ilobezi purchases cattle almost exclusively from traditional farmers. Close to 700 smallholders sold cattle to Ilobezi and 50 FTE jobs were sustained or created in 2017.
Lift in income
UPLIFT IN INCOME
Suppliers of cattle to Ilobezi had an estimated income uplift of $555 in 2017.
Food security
FOOD SECURITY
Income security through the diversification of income away from maize. In 2016/2017, in order to improve feed security and climate resilience, Ilobezi piloted sorghum silage as an alternative to maize silage. The sorghum resulted in higher silage yields and had a wider harvesting window. If Ilobezi had not made the switch to sorghum silage from maize silage, there would have been a complete crop failure.
Community
IMPROVED COMMUNITIES
Improved access to market, improved genetics from bull exchange program. Quality bulls received by Ilobezi are swapped for lower quality bulls/steers, introducing better genetics to suppliers’ herds.

Overview
The Challenges

Zambia’s Southern Province is historically drought-prone (relative to the rest of Zambia). It is also home to the majority of Zambia’s cattle. The national cattle herd is estimated at between 2.73 and 3.14 million animals with 80% of these kept under traditional management systems. Cattle and other livestock provide a significant income source for many rural communities.

Our Approach

AgDevCo’s investment provides a market for traditional cattle in Zambia’s Southern Province. In addition to purchasing cattle, Ilobezi pays a premium for better quality cattle and reduces the cost of access to market by paying for the transport of animals to the feedlot.

Our Impact
  • Ilobezi purchased 5,410 head of traditional cattle in 2017.
  • 120ha of drought-resistant sorghum has been planted for silage.
  • Capital leveraged includes $94k from sponsor.
  • Ilobezi purchased cattle from c.700 smallholders in 2017 creating a significant income uplift.
