Zambia’s Southern Province is historically drought prone (relative to the country). It is also home to the majority of Zambia’s cattle. The national cattle herd is estimated at between 2.73 and 3.14 million animals with 80% of these kept under traditional management systems. Cattle and other livestock provide a significant income source for many rural communities. In addition to cattle, Ilobezi purchases smallholder sunflower to meet its feed needs providing a market for an alternate drought-resistant crop.
AgDevCo’s investment shall provide a market for traditional cattle in even the most remote parts of Zambia’s Southern Province. In addition to purchasing cattle, AgDevCo’s investment will enable Ilobezi to pay a premium for better quality cattle and reduce the cost of access to market by paying for the transport of animals to the feedlot. The investment provides a market for 1,650t of sunflower seed. Sunflower seed is estimated to have a gross margin of $160/ha.
