Issifu Basideen, GEE’S FRESH POINT, Ghana
Gee’s purchases poultry from hundreds of smallholders in the Northern Region of Ghana. AgDevCo’s investment will enable Gee’s to increase its processing capacity, meaning that more small-scale farmers will be linked to a formal market, leading to income uplift and increased security.
"Gee’s provides a ready market for my guinea fowl, which brings income to me and my household."
Overview
The Challenges

Guinea fowl is the most-reared poultry in northern Ghana and plays an important role in the rural economy but the value-chain has been held back by a lack of access to modern, hygienic facilities. The only processing facilities available to local farmers are poorly maintained public abattoirs. Gee’s Fresh Point is a slaughterer, processor and marketer of frozen specialty meat, indirectly sourced from hundreds of smallholder farmers across northern Ghana. In order to expand its operations, Gee’s required funding for capital expenditure and management support.

Our Approach

AgDevCo provided a loan to finance the upgrading of the processing line and to purchase a refrigerated truck and cold storage facility. In addition, AgDevCo has provided technical assistance, supporting the business’ financial management and the installation of the new, mechanised processing facility.

Our Impact
  • The number of birds sold per farmer has increased from 70 in 2015 to 80 in 2016.
  • 18 FTE employees working for Gee’s (49% female), 3 FTE jobs created or sustained in 2016.
  • Capital expenditure financed by AgDevCo will treble processing capacity.
  • Expansion of distribution network is expected to boost sales and provide higher and more regular incomes for supplying farmers.
