SDU role

Faranaya’s reputation for top-quality sorghum earned its significant contract with leading brewery, Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited. AgDevCo’s SDU is supporting field extension officers to help maintain high-quality standards and expand Faranaya’s outgrower programme as sorghum demand increases. By establishing a reliable market, Faranaya is promoting sorghum as a cash crop and reducing dependence on subsistence farming in the area. Despite Faranaya’s commercial success, the SDU’s work remains critical as the business continues to face many challenges in this arid region.

Smart investment and support
Sustainable expansion
Farmers are benefitting from training in good agricultural practices, conservation farming and post-harvest techniques to reduce aflatoxin levels. Trials are underway to improve crop quality and yields by comparing sorghum varieties and fertiliser application methods. To ensure a sustainable expansion of Faranaya's smallholder farming base, additional extension officers have been hired, demonstration plots established, and outgrower management software commissioned.
