FOOD SECURITY
Improved seeds have been offered for the last 3 years decreasing the risk during drought years. Bella Xima (fortified maize meal), a new product to the market, is sourced from local farmers and has improved their livelihoods with economic opportunity and guaranteed market. The product is fortified to improve the nutrition of the end user.

IMPROVED COMMUNITIES
ECA offers innovative services to outgrowers, including mobile phone payments (Mpesa) and a warehouse receipt system for access to credit as well as training and assistance through its extension program.
"THE PRICE IS GOOD. I HAVE ACHIEVED MANY THINGS. LAST YEAR I BOUGHT TWO COWS AND THIS YEAR I EXPECT TO BUY ANOTHER TWO. I WANT TO BUY A SPAN OF OXEN."
Overview
The Challenges

With an almost non-existent public extension system and no reliable access to modern inputs for smallholder farmers, ECA is demonstrating that there is a commercially-sustainable way of engaging large numbers of smallholder farmers in a formal marketing system. Through improved farmer productivity and by sharing the benefits of value addition, ECA’s approach has the potential to be replicated elsewhere.

Our Approach

AgDevCo has provided both debt and equity financing, most of which has been used to establish a state-of-the art maize mill and develop an outgrower programme.  ECA is able to offer a reliable market and fair prices by securing offtake agreements and linking farmers with high volume market players
