Overview
The Challenges

Post-harvest losses represent huge wasted potential in African agriculture, with valuable food crops never reaching the market. EA Fruits and Farm Limited (EA Fruits) is a production, trading and distribution business aimed at minimising post-harvest losses by buying horticultural produce directly from smallholder farmers and delivering it to major local customers and markets via cold chain logistics. In order to realise its business plan, EA Fruits required significant investment in cold storage infrastructure and logistics equipment.

Our Approach

AgDevCo’s investment of $400,000 will enable the purchase of key cold-storage infrastructure, refrigerated delivery vehicles and a central pack house and cold storage facility required to expand the business. The investment will be made on a phased basis and AgDevCo continues to play an active role in advising the business on its expansion plans and outgrower engagement, including the promotion of farming best practices and the potential contracting of top-performing growers.

Our Impact
  • 38% of EA Fruits employees are women.
  • As opposed to traditional producers, smallholder suppliers to EA Fruits are able to sell in bulk and in a timely manner reducing waste and boosting income.
  • Production for local consumption only.
  • Development of cold chain storage and management along the value chain.
