African agribusinesses regularly have their resilience tested – through both day-to-day operations as well as dramatic shocks such as pandemics, political change, extreme weather events and shifting global market dynamics. The most resilient businesses are often those most able to innovate and adapt. However, innovation and adaptation can be costly endeavours and bring risk of failure. Technical assistance facilities are well-placed partners to share these costs, de-risk new ideas, and ultimately support the building of better businesses.

During this event, the SDU team and partner businesses will share stories of extending smallholder engagement models over the past five years – when things have worked and when they have not. By sharing these experiences, the event aims to illustrate (i) how failures can translate into unexpected stories of success, and (ii) the important role of technical assistance support in unlocking this potential.

Women farmers in sub-Saharan African continue to face a range of constraints that limit their productivity and inclusion in smallholder schemes. This also results in missed opportunities for increased productivity, quality, and supply chain stability for agribusinesses. This event will showcase best practices and quick wins that SDU partners have been implementing to promote women’s economic empowerment while improving business performance, thereby creating win-win solutions.

AgDevCo recognises that it takes more than patient capital to build profitable, sustainable commercial agribusinesses. For commercial agribusinesses to grow in a financially, environmentally, and socially sustainable way, they also require access to fit-for-purpose technical assistance. The SDU has been AgDevCo’s main vehicle for delivering technical assistance to agribusinesses over the past five years.

This event will highlight important successes and key learnings from the SDU that AgDevCo will carry forward to a new technical assistance facility. The event will also underline why impact investors, such as AgDevCo, are well-placed partners for donors and grant-makers seeking to deliver sustainable impact among agricultural actors across sub-Saharan Africa. Please join AgDevCo and its funders in celebrating five years of driving sustainable agricultural development for African smallholder farmers and commercial agribusinesses alike.
