Julie Abisgold
Senior Agricultural Specialist

Julie is an integrated pest management specialist, responsible for IPM input to existing and prospective investments. She has extensive experience in providing strategic, technical and operational advice to commercial agricultural projects, smallholders, NGO’s and government bodies in Africa. Before joining AgDevCo, Julie developed a successful IPM consultancy focussed on the field and stored product pests of a wide range of crops in sub-Saharan Africa. Prior to this, Julie worked as an applied entomologist for UK’s Natural Resources Institute in West Africa and South East Asia, and for Papua New Guinea’s Institute of Medical Research. Julie holds a BSc in Biology from the University of Dundee, and a DPhil in Entomology from the University of Oxford.

DEBORAH ADEYEMO
Senior Human Resources Manager

Deborah Adeyemo, Senior HR Manager is responsible for the implementation and management of strategic and operational HR. Before joining AgDevCo, Deborah was HR Manager at Africa Practice, dealing with multiple teams across sub-Saharan Africa. Prior to this, Deborah worked in various HR and project roles for the British Museum’s Learning and Audiences department. Deborah has a BA Hons degree in Business Law and Management and an advanced CIPD qualification in Human Resources Management.

Tom Adlam
Director, Rwanda

Tom is responsible for developing AgDevCo's investment pipeline and portfolio in Rwanda, and for providing support to the Uganda-based investment team. A UK Chartered Accountant by profession, Tom has well over 20 years' experience of living and working in East & Southern Africa. Most recently, he led Pearl Capital Partners, an impact investment fund manager focusing on the agriculture value chain, from its formation in Uganda in 2005 until late 2015, by which time it had made investments in more than 30 early stage or expanding businesses with total commitments of $35 million. Previously, he held senior management positions in CDC's managed business team in Tanzania and Zimbabwe, with Coopers & Lybrand in Kenya, and with Oxfam UK and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Sudan and Kenya. Tom holds a Masters degree from Oxford University.

WILLIAMS AMOAKO
DRIVER

Williams is a driver for the AgDevCo team. He has experience in the transportation, civil engineering and mining sectors. Prior to joining AgDevCo, Williams worked with companies including Sky Hawk Logistics Ghana, Golden Falls Mining South Africa and Crystal Premier Services Ghana. He has also worked with the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) and the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL). He has a Diploma in Construction and Civil Engineering from Takoradi Polytechnic and Proficiency in Mineral Engineering, Drilling and Blast from Tarkwa School of Mines.

Francis Amoyea
Agronomist

Prior to joining AgDevCo, Francis completed National Service with Ministry of Food and Agriculture. Before this, he worked for a private company called Wienco Ghana Ltd which focused on cotton production where he worked for three years. Additionally, Francis also worked with Masara who focused on Maize production.

Bruno Andipa
Associate Director, Mozambique

Bruno is responsible for assisting developing AgDevCo's investment pipeline and portfolio in Mozambique. Bruno brings over 15 years of experience encompassing Project Development, Management Consultancy, Investment Banking, and Market Linkages across sub-Saharan Africa, Brazil, Middle East and North Africa. In Mozambique, Bruno has established and managed the subsidiary of a listed company that caters to O&G and mining sectors. Formerly, he has worked on various capacities at IFC, as senior business advisor for ACDI/VOCA and on multiple assignments for institutions such as CLUSA, DANIDA, FAO and the Ministry of Agriculture.

LEONARDO ANDRE GUERRAS
Assistant Accountant

Leonardo provides accounting and administrative support in the Maputo office. Before joining AgDevCo Leonardo worked as a treasurer for Bolloré Africa Logistics, an African integrated logistics network. Leonardo has a technical degree in Accounting and Management from the Education and Management Institute and is currently pursuing a Bachelor degree in Accounting and Auditing at ISCTEM, Maputo.

CHRIS BISHOP
Senior Agricultural Advisor

Chris provides agricultural advice to Zambian and Ugandan investees and comes with over 30 years of diverse agricultural experience in Zimbabwe, Malawi and Zambia. Before joining AgDevCo, Chris was the Country Agronomist for Alliance One Zambia, where he managed direct production farms, financed large-scale and smallholder farmers and established a smallholder farmer training academy.  Prior to this, Chris financed and monitored large-scale farming at Stancom Tobacco in Malawi. He also ran his own farm in Zimbabwe for 20 years, growing a variety of crops. Chris has a BSc Agriculture obtained from the University of Natal in 1981.

MULENGA JANE BWALYA
Investment Manager

Mulenga helps to develop investments across the Zambia Catalytic Fund portfolio. Mulenga started her career with Foundation for Community Assistance, working with business women to progress access to village banking, and later joined NORSAD in the project portfolio management and monitoring unit.  Mulenga has also worked for Access Bank Zambia and Naznet Fund.  She holds a Masters in Development and Globalization from the University of Antwerp in Belgium, a Bachelors degree in Finance from Africa Nazarene University in Nairobi and is an ACCA chartered accountant.

SEAN CAREY
Associate Director

Sean is responsible for certain new and existing investments across the AgDevCo portfolio. Sean joined AgDevCo’s London office from an alternative investment business, focusing on renewable energy, infrastructure and other real asset investments. Sean previously worked for Ernst & Young focussing on multinational mining, renewable energy and oil & gas engagements in various countries. Sean grew up in South Africa and graduated from the University of Cape Town with a Bachelor of Business Science degree specialising in finance and management and is also a chartered accountant (CA).

ALICE CHAPPLE
Impact Advisor

Alice is an economist and sustainable development specialist, with experience in designing and implementing impact assessment systems. Alice has several years‘ experience of designing and implementing ESG (environmental, social and governance) impact assessment monitoring and evaluation systems for private sector-funded projects. Alice developed the original ESG policies and toolkit for CDC in the 1990s. She has an MA in economics from Cambridge University and is a chartered accountant.

VALENTINE CHITALU
Vice Chair

Valentine is an entrepreneur in Southern Africa, specialising in private equity and local private sector development and attracting local and foreign investment into Africa. Valentine worked previously for CDC/Actis in London and Lusaka, specialising in deal origination throughout Southern Africa and portfolio management in Zambia and Malawi. He was also Chief Executive Officer at the Zambia Privatisation Agency. Valentine is a UK qualified Accountant and holds a Masters Degree in Development Economics from Cambridge University in the United Kingdom.

Other current positions: Valentine holds several board positions in Zambia, Australia, South Africa and the United Kingdom and is Chairman of Zambian Breweries, MTN (Zambia) Limited and ALBIDON (Zambia) Limited. He also has an investment portfolio in the financial, mining and agriculture sectors.

Laura Cramphorn
Responsible Investment Specialist

Laura has joined the London team working alongside Alec Martin (Head of ESG). She has spent a lot of time on the ground in Africa, particularly in Sierra Leone and Kenya. Laura has worked in social performance, social impact and local content with rural and agricultural communities affected by the oil and gas and mining sectors for a number of years. Laura holds an MSc in NGOs and Development from London School of Economics.

Kevin Cripps
Strategic HR Advisor

Kevin is the Strategic HR Advisor providing support on company-wide strategic HR. He brings a wealth of experience spanning over 35 years working for international, finance and investment companies such as BNP Paribas, Oikocredit and Pfizer in Head of HR and HR Director Positions. Over the last 10 years, he has supported several companies as an independent consultant. He specialises in strategic international HR, organisational development and planning.

Victoria Crisp
Investment Manager

Victoria supports both the SDU and Platforms teams in projects across AgDevCo geographies. Before joining AgDevCo Victoria worked at the Soros Economic Development Fund, executing and managing program related investments in sub-Saharan Africa with a focus on financial inclusion and alleviation of poverty. Prior to this Victoria spent three years at Standard Chartered Bank, based out of Johannesburg working as an analyst in the M&A and corporate banking teams. Victoria graduated from the University of Cape Town with a Bachelor of Business Science degree specialising in finance and accounting and is a CFA.

SALOMAO CUAMBE
Operations and Finance Manager, Mozambique

Salomao is responsible for preparing, developing and analysing management accounting records and overseeing the internal financial administration of the Maputo office. Salomoa has over 10 years of financial accounting and consulting experience, having managed client accounts in Mozambique, Italy and Portugal. He has a degree in Management from Eduardo Mondlane University and two Accountancy Degrees from the Commercial School and Commercial Institute of Maputo. He is also a Member of the Order of Accountants and Auditors of Mozambique (OCAM).

CHARLOTTE Dubois
Senior Investment Manager

Charlotte focuses predominantly on AgDevCo’s Malawi portfolio. Charlotte is an investment professional with over ten years’ experience, working for corporate, investment management and professional services firms across Europe and the Middle East.  In roles prior to joining AgDevCo, she was integral in expanding Etihad Airways and also worked as part of the private equity team for a Middle Eastern Sovereign Wealth Fund .  Charlotte qualified as a chartered accountant at Deloitte in London and spent two years at PwC in Paris in their transaction advisory practice. Charlotte has a BA in Mathematics and French from the University of Leeds.

ANDREW DUFFIELD
Associate

Andrew focuses on investment development, monitoring, reporting and providing financial modelling and analysis across the portfolio. Andrew is Canadian, and first came to Zambia in 2013 with Engineers Without Borders in a business development role. He worked previously as an analyst for an African-focused risk advisory consultancy in London, and completed internships and consultancies with the UN World Food Programme in Rome, DFID in London and the Ministry of Agriculture in Canada.  He completed his Masters in International Development at the London School of Economics, where he specialised in public policy and economic development.

ROB FISHER
Senior Agricultural Adviser

With an agricultural and export background, Rob provides agronomic consultancy for commercial projects in many parts of Africa. Alongside his long-term involvement in farming and a flower seed export business in Zimbabwe, Rob has developed a successful career in agronomic consultancy, including due diligence and feasibility studies for commercial agricultural projects in many parts of Africa.  He has also worked significantly with mainly NGO-sponsored outgrower programmes throughout Zimbabwe. Rob graduated with B.Sc. (Agric) and M.Sc. (Agric) degrees at the University of Kwazulu Natal.

SARAH FORREST
Group Investment Finance and Strategy Manager

Sarah maintains the debt and equity accounts of AgDevCo’s investees, provides financial support to the investment teams and supervises the accounting function of a number of country finance teams. Sarah qualified as a chartered accountant at Ernst & Young in London, before moving to the Sydney office where she worked as an audit manager. Sarah then moved into the international development sector, working in France for an agricultural research NGO and at BBC Media Action, before moving to AgDevCo UK.

Kaylyn Fraser
SDU Investment Manager

Kaylyn supports AgDevCo’s Smallholder Development Unit (SDU). Prior to joining AgDevCo, Kaylyn spent nearly seven years at Cambridge Economic Policy Associates (CEPA) – a London-based economic and financial policy advisory firm. At CEPA, Kaylyn worked as a Senior Consultant across the Agriculture, Global Health and International Infrastructure practices. She advised clients including the World Bank and International Finance Corporation, DFID, the Gates Foundation, the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), the Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG), the European Investment Bank (EIB), the West African Development Bank (BOAD) and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, amongst others. Kaylyn has supported project work across Africa and Asia, in both English and French. She holds two postgraduate degrees – a Master of Science in Economic History from the London School of Economics in the UK and a Master of Economics and Public Policy from Sciences Po in France – in addition to a Bachelors of Arts in Economics from Dalhousie University in Canada.

Financial Controller

Chris is responsible for financial reporting, audit and tax matters across the group.  Chris is a Chartered Certified Accountant with over 10 years’ experience in the investment management industry. He qualified with Ernst & Young before holding senior finance positions with Octopus Investments, Apax Partners and the private investment office of an UHNWI. Chris also spent 3 months volunteering in Cambodia, supporting the finance function of a social enterprise involved in recycling.  Chris has a BSc in Economics from York University.

Rob Fuller
Monitoring & Evaluation Specialist

Rob is responsible for monitoring, evaluation and learning within the Smallholder Development Unit. He has experience of studying the effectiveness of rural development programmes and microfinance schemes in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Prior to joining AgDevCo, he spent several years with Oxfam, leading quasi-experimental impact evaluations and synthesising their findings. He has a BSc in Mathematics and Statistics from Birkbeck College, University of London, and an MSc in Economics from the University of Edinburgh.

Legal Counsel

Richard works with the in-house legal team, supporting all portfolio projects. Before joining AgDevCo Richard spent over four years at Michelmores LLP, where he advised on a range of domestic and cross-border private client matters. Richard is qualified as a solicitor in England & Wales. He obtained his LLB from the College of Law in London and has a MA in Modern History from the University of East Anglia, with a particular focus on International Relations.

Barbara Ghansah
Associate Director

Barbara is Associate Director and Country Manager of AgDevCo's Ghana office.  Before joining AgDevCo, Barbara worked for Root Capital for almost 6 years, and was responsible for growing and managing the loan portfolio in Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Prior to that she worked with the US African Development Foundation in the role of Program Coordinator and Development Specialist and with Deloitte and Touche Ghana as a Manager with the Consulting Unit. Barbara also has 5 years’ development banking experience with the National Investment Bank in Ghana and has also practiced as an independent consultant, providing advisory services to SMEs. She has a B.A. Degree in Economics with Political Science and M.A in Economic Policy Management from the University of Ghana. She also as a professional accounting qualification from the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), UK

MARIANA GRACA
Investment Manager

Mariana, a native Portuguese speaker, leads AgDevCo’s investments in West Africa. She has 5+ years’ experience in deal execution and portfolio management in a Sub-Saharan African context, in both East and West Africa. Before joining AgDevCo Mariana was a consultant for the United Nations and worked in rural Rwanda to help implement a self-sufficient school model. Prior to that Mariana worked as business intelligence and ESG researcher for Arachnys and Vigeo EIRIS, respectively. As a student, Mariana interned at a Human Rights office in Cape Town and at the United Nations. Mariana has an MSc in International Relations from the London School of Economics and holds qualifications in finance.

Paul, a native French speaker, is a member of the West Africa team as an intern to support the francophone West Africa expansion. He is an undergraduate at the Ecole des Ponts et Chaussées ParisTech and is completing a Master’s Degree in Finance.

Mohamedali Habib
Analyst

Mohamedali is part of the Tanzanian team as an Analyst. Prior to joining AgDevCo, he worked for PwC Tanzania as an Audit Associate, gathering experience in various industries including financial services (insurance and banking), telecommunications, logistics and mining. Mohamedali is an ACCA Affiliate, and also obtained his Bachelor’s degree (Hons) in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University. He will be sitting for his CFA Level 3 exam in June 2018.

Sam Hayley
Analyst

Sam works as an Analyst supporting the Rwanda, Uganda and Malawi investment teams. Before joining AgDevCo, Sam spent three years at a Birmingham based venture capital firm. He worked on investing regional development funds into small and medium-sized enterprises across the West Midlands with a particular emphasis on early stage and technology businesses. Sam has a BSc in Economics from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Charlotte Haynes
Operations Administrator

Charlotte supports the Operations and HR departments. She supports projects, helps streamline processes and provides administrative support for both functions. Charlotte is an experienced Office Manager, PA and Team Assistant with a wealth of experience in the creative industries, having worked across Film, PR, advertising, and social media. She has predominantly worked within in-house Finance teams supporting month-end processes, as well as PA to numerous senior Directors and managing an office. Charlotte has a degree in Mass Communications (BA Hons) as well as a year in Film and TV Production.

JIM HENDERSON
Director, Malawi

Jim was instrumental in setting up the Malawi office and is now responsible for managing all current and potential country investments. Jim has over 15 years experience in greenfield projects development and agricultural finance consulting for both commercial and smallholder projects in sub-Saharan and West African countries.  Jim was educated in Zimbabwe and holds a diploma in Agriculture.

Jasmin Hidanovic
Associate

Jasmin is a member of the West Africa regional investment team with a specific focus on Ghana and francophone West Africa (previously also having covered Zambia extensively). He also coordinates AgDevCo’s efforts to promote gender equality and women’s economic empowerment through its investments. Jasmin has five years of work experience in the fields of corporate finance/M&A, real estate, and social impact investment. He worked at Ernst & Young in the Transaction Advisory Services practice and has done internships at KPMG Advisory and ABN AMRO Bank. He is a graduate from the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University, with an MSc in Finance & Investments and a BSc in International Business Administration. He also spent a year on exchange at the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology and the Wharton Business School in the US. Jasmin passed the CFA Level III Exam and is pursuing the CFA designation.

DANIEL HULLS
CEO

Daniel is an investment, public policy and development professional with over 25 years of experience in both the private and public sectors. Daniel is an experienced investor and senior manager who has played an important role in AgDevCo’s development since 2011.  He has strong ties with Africa having been born in Tanzania and having worked across the continent since 2001.  Daniel was the founding director of CEPA (a UK-based finance and economics consultancy) and was Managing Director until 2009. Prior to that, he worked for N M Rothschild in project finance and asset sales; and at the UK Treasury. Daniel has a BA in History and Economics from Oxford University and an MSc in Economics from University College London.  He was a non-executive Director and Chair of the finance and audit committee at Community Housing Group.

CHRIS ISAAC
Managing Director

Chris is one of AgDevCo’s founding directors. He has been working on development finance issues in Africa for the past 15 years, including two extended periods living overseas. Chris’ experience includes working in infrastructure project development at InfraCo Africa, as an economic adviser for the UK’s Department for International Development and as an adviser and speechwriter to the Minister of Finance in the Namibian government. His career started as a corporate finance specialist with Arthur Andersen in London, after completing the prestigious Arthur Andersen scholarship programme. Chris has economics degrees from University College, Oxford (BA Hons) and the London School of Economics (MSc) and holds an advanced qualification in investment appraisal. His responsibilities at AgDevCo include being the senior investment director responsible for East Africa (Rwanda, Uganda, Malawi and Kenya) and West Africa (Ghana, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast and Senegal).  


Other current positions: Chris is a member of AgDevCo’s Board and Executive Committee. He also holds a number of board positions in AgDevCo’s subsidiary and investee companies.

Ibrahim Iscandar
Community Liaison Officer

Prior to AgDevCo, Ibrahim was a Field co-ordinating Officer for EXIM Bank Ghana as well as a consultant for Presbyterian Agric. In this role, he aided in preparing a 5-year strategic plan for the organization.

Peter James
Senior Investment Manager

Peter has 12 years of experience in the investment and banking sector and has worked in both the private and public sectors. Since 2015, Peter has lead AgDevCo’s infrastructure and renewable energy platform which seeks to create sustainable agribusiness by providing infrastructure and energy solutions. Prior to joining AgDevCo, Peter worked with CPCS Transcom for 3 years where he held Key Expert Financial positions on a variety of projects in infrastructure sectors such as energy, rail, marine and transport. At Export Development Canada, he led the management of an extractives A/R portfolio of more than USD $1.5 Billion in exposure through the global financial downturn.

 

His management resulted in no material losses, despite continuous debtor restructurings and insolvency scenarios. He then worked as a Senior Associate completing syndicate and bilateral loan facilities totalling more than USD $100 Million for EDC. During the years 2005 – 2009, Peter held progressive roles at the Bank of Nova Scotia in commercial banking. He has led and participated in transactions and trade meetings throughout Africa, Europe, North America, Middle East and Asia. Peter holds an MBA from the University of Ottawa, is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and completed a “Renewable Energy Expert Certificate” by European Energy Centre in 2015.

NICK JONES
Associate Director

Nick is responsible for managing all current and potential Tanzanian investments and oversees the country team and office. Nick’s career started in the Corporate Finance Execution team at BNP Paribas, where he gained experience across many industries and geographies. He moved to a fund and asset management business, focused on sustainable investments, including the development of forestry and agroforestry investment vehicles. He also helped launch an Impact Investment and advisory business, specialising in renewable energy, housing and agriculture in the UK and developing markets. Nick graduated from the University of Bath with a 1st class Honours degree in Business Administration.

Marc Jones
Investment Consultant, SIERRA LEONE

Marc began his career at UBS Investment Bank where he worked in Equities Finance in New York and London. Following that Marc spent 3 years in Sierra Leone as Investment Manager with ManoCap, a multi sector impact investing fund. Most recently Marc has worked as an independent investment consultant advising clients such as The World Bank Group in Sierra Leone and InterMarket Bank in Zambia.

 

Marc holds an MSc in the Economic Analysis of International Trade, Finance and Development from the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics, and an MA in Economics from the University of Glasgow.

Amadu Kamara
Office Manager and Accountant

Amadu is a Sierra Leone accountant with over 5 years’ experience as an ACCA trained Accountant and Office manager.

Before joining AgDevCo, Amadu worked at an investment business where he was responsible for oversight of investee companies accounts. In this role, he oversaw internal and external audits and the production of regular management accounts. He has also played a role in the due diligence of potential investee companies, including a review of accounts, invoices, bank statements and developing financial manuals and systems.

 

In his spare time, Amadu likes to study towards his profession, do some travelling, reading running. He also likes to involve himself in some volunteer work with teenagers – by using his experience to teach, guide and inspired them in whatever goals they are trying to achieve during the course of their life.

Linda Kambalametore
Accountant

Linda is an ACCA student currently pursuing the final part of the professional level. She holds a diploma in accounting and is also currently working on a research project in the Hons in Applied accounting program under a joint scheme between ACCA and oxford brooks University. She has a cumulative of 6 years work experience in the private sector acquired mainly while working for Malawi Cargo Centre Limited and Farmers World Limited respectively.

STEVEN KAMOTO
Finance and Operations Manager

Steven is responsible for implementing accounting systems and managing local accounts, with support from the finance team in London. Steven is an experienced accountant and administrator and has worked in several corporate companies in Malawi and Mozambique, including Coopers & Lybrand, international NGOs, and as a Malawi Government board member for statutory corporations. He is currently a member of the audit committee overseeing four government ministries.

Rob Kilner
Senior Investment Manager

Rob has been involved with AgDevCo Malawi since 2013 as a non-executive board member. He did some consulting work for the company in 2016 and 2017, taking a lead role on the Kapani poultry investment. Rob was born in Malawi and worked in the tobacco industry for more than 40 years, spending his latter years as Regional Director Africa for one of the leading corporate players. He has wide knowledge of the agricultural sector in Malawi, including smallholder sourcing models.

Impact Manager

Mollie manages AgDevCo’s impact work to ensure our investments boost prosperity and improve food security for farmers, their households, and communities. She is an economic development specialist, with primary experience in market system development and women’s economic empowerment in sub-Saharan Africa. Mollie has lived in seven different African countries and advised on the monitoring and evaluation of DFID funded programmes in Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, the DRC, and Ethiopia. Prior to working at AgDevCo, Mollie lived in Ghana and worked as a Monitoring, Learning and Dissemination Specialist for outgrower schemes in the rice, vegetables and groundnut sectors.  Mollie holds an MPhil in Development Economics from the University of Cambridge.

LOMBE LUMBWE
Associate

Lombe works in the Zambian team as an analyst, supporting the Zambia Catalytic Fund projects. Lombe graduated from the University of Leicester with an MSc in Financial Economics, having obtained a BA (Honours) degree at the same university. Lombe acquired multinational experience as an administrative intern at Lafarge Zambia plc. He has a strong interest in agricultural finance and plans to attain his Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) qualification.

Investment Manager

Marlo’s main role is to manage current investment projects and analyse their investment opportunities. Prior to joining AgDevCo, Marlo worked for the Banco Internacional de Moçambique, where he gained experience in due diligence and the financial analysis of investment projects. He also worked for Ernst & Young as Financial Auditor. Marlo graduated from the Instituto Superior Politécnico e Universitário, where he was an Assistant Lecturer in Mathematics for a period.

Joanna provides day-to-day administrative support to the Malawi team. Joanna is an experienced professional Finance and Administrative Assistant with almost ten years’ experience acquired while working for Save the Children and Land O’Lakes Malawi.  She holds an Advanced Diploma in Human Resource Development and Certificate of USAID Rules and Regulations: Grants & Cooperative Agreements, and is currently studying for a Diploma in Business & Accounting (ACCA).

Melissa Manzo
General Counsel

Melissa heads up AgDevCo’s legal team and has a background in international debt financing. Melissa and her team advise on the structuring and documentation of AgDevCo’s investments, on regulatory, compliance and governance matters applicable to AgDevCo in the UK and in its countries of operation in sub-Saharan Africa, and on the development of AgDevCo’s policies and procedures. Melissa sits on AgDevCo’s Executive Committee, is the Chair of AgDevCo’s Smallholder Development Unit subcommittee, and is the director representative for AgDevCo’s gender programme. Prior to joining AgDevCo, Melissa worked at the international law firm Allen & Overy LLP for 12 years, where she advised on cross-border banking and restructuring transactions. Whilst at Allen & Overy, Melissa founded and managed its microfinance and social investment group and worked on a number of pro bono matters. She has also spent time on secondment to the emerging markets desk at Citigroup. Melissa has a BA in Oriental Studies from Oxford University and a postgraduate diploma in law from BPP Law School.

Head of ESG

Alec joined AgDevCo in late 2016 bringing over 15 years’ experience in ESG in international project development and investment. Prior to this Alec spent 5 years at global sustainability consultancy ERM as a Principal Consultant focussing on ESG and Responsible Investment. Alec previously spent ten years at the international engineering consultant Halcrow where we was Technical Leader for Environmental Water Quality and a Principal Scientist. For a number of years Alec also helped run a small Malawi based Water and Sanitation NGO in a voluntary capacity.

Aiste Mazeikaite
Group Financial Accountant

Aiste is responsible for group audit and tax matters, as well as looking after UK accounting and will be involved in assisting and supervising local finance teams. She is a qualified accountant with ACCA and have many years of accounting experience in different sectors. Before joining AgDevCo she spent the last three years working in Datalogic managing accounts for all EMEA branches.

PETER McSPORRAN
Non-Executive Director

Peter is a qualified financial advisor in the Zambian agribusiness market, following a long career in Southern African agriculture. Peter, who has been a successful farmer for 28 years, was a major figure in the agricultural market liberalisation in Zimbabwe, having been President of the Commercial Farmers Union. For many years he was a board member of Seed Co and the Tanganda Tea Co. Peter was also Chairman of the Zambian Agricultural Commodity Exchange (ZAMACE), which he helped to establish.

Other current positions: Peter is a Founder and Director of Agricultural Advisors International, a consultancy company based in Zambia. Peter is also a consultant to Barclays Bank Zambia, ZANACO and Stanbic Bank, and a director of Golden Lay Agriculture (Zambia) and Farm Engineering Malawi.

Associate

James is an Investment Associate for the Rwanda and Tanzania portfolios. He has four years’ experience in deal execution, portfolio management and investment modelling in a Sub-Saharan African context, in particular East Africa. James holds a MSc in Investments from Birmingham Business School, were he researched responsible investments and renewable energy. He also holds a BSc in Economics with German from Royal Holloway, University of London.

Dr Julia Mensink
Impact Manager

Julia leads AgDevCo’s impact work and the monitoring and evaluation of the Smallholder Development Unit. She has over ten years of experience in international development and economic research. Julia started her career in academia and subsequently worked for the international charity VSO where she managed global results and data frameworks in over 30 countries across Africa and Asia, and developed and implemented strategies on evaluations, evidence based case studies, value for money, knowledge sharing and capacity building. Julia holds a PhD from the London School of Economics and an MSc in Economics from the University of Amsterdam.

Wasili Mfungwe
Analyst

Wasili supports the Malawi team in managing existing and potential investments. Wasili started his career at an asset management firm investing in equities, fixed income and property asset classes. He later worked with two commercial banks in their risk divisions. He has also worked with a telecom company managing debt and equity raising transactions. Prior to joining AgDevCo, he was working at a consulting firm analyzing industries, formulating strategic plans and conducting impact assessments. Wasili has a Social Science Degree in Economics and an MBA from Heriot-Watt University.

FLORA MMBANDO
Finance Officer

Flora provides administrative and financial support to all Tanzanian projects and manages general office administration. Flora brings to AgDevCo Tanzania over 22 years of public and private sector experience in finance and office administration. This includes supporting farmers at a grassroots level through USAID and other international NGO programmes in Tanzania. In addition to several Finance and Administration training courses in Tanzania, Flora has undertaken a tour of learning in the USA and an exposure visit to Israel.

Ndaki Mpanda
FInancial Accountant

Ndaki is the Financial Accountant for Tanzania office. He brings to AgDevCo five years of experience attained from construction and agricultural sectors. Prior to joining AgDevCo, Ndaki worked as an area Africa’s project accountant for BAM International bv and later as the  finance and administration officer for Njombe Out-growers Services Co. Ltd (NOSC) , a subsidiary of The Wood Foundation-Africa implementing a project to assist tea small-holder farmers and the Tanzanian tea sector in general. Ndaki holds a Bachelor degree in Commerce majoring in accountancy and finance, from University of Madras of India and he is currently pursuing a professional qualification in accountancy (CPA).

SYTSKE MUIJS
Investment Manager

Sytske assesses and manages projects with a particular focus on the Zambia Catalytic Fund. Sytske has a deep knowledge of the Zambian commercial agricultural landscape having been involved in her family’s farm, which focuses on livestock production. Before joining AgDevCo, Sytske was a policy advisor at the Product Board for Livestock and Meat in the Netherlands and also managed the Dutch Livestock Export Association.  She has an MSc in Animal Sciences from Wageningen University in the Netherlands.

Grace is an office administrator at AgDevCo’s Uganda office and is also a personal assistant to the Associate Director of Uganda/Rwanda; Tom Adlam. Mutinta Ndhlovu
Project Manager

Mutinta Ndhlovu is Project Manager for the Zambia office, undertaking project implementation for Northern Zambia developments.

Mutinta has a background in high level corporate administration having worked for international corporates and agribusiness firms. Previously Mutinta worked for PWC and was responsible for agricultural receiverships. She also worked for a large agricultural international company, Amatheon Agri as Project Manager and provided the conduit between the Berlin and Zambia offices.  She has also worked in several family owned businesses.

Mutinta holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics with Development Studies from Sussex University, UK.

Shiloh Olatoye
SDU Finance Manager

Shiloh is responsible for the financial and management accounts of the Smallholder Development Unit (SDU) while also supporting the unit with project analysis and reporting. He has worked in three continents in various sectors ranging from consulting to food manufacturing to oil and gas. He is a Chartered Certified Accountant with an MBA in Project Management.

Finance and Administration Manager

Jennifer has joined AgDevCo as Finance and Administration Manager for our Zambia office and has more than 30 years’ finance experience across various sectors including farming, retail, manufacturing, building and architecture. She worked for almost 10 years at the British Council Zambia, a registered UK charity for education, culture and development services and also spent 4 years as Assistant Financial Controller for sub-Saharan Africa in charge of risk assessment and compliance working across the region.

Jennifer holds a Masters degree in Finance from Heriot Watt University, Scotland and is also a Fellow of both ACCA and Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants.

KEITH PALMER
Chairman and Founder

Keith is the Chairman and founding sponsor of AgDevCo and brings to the business a wealth of social investment experience across developing countries. Keith has founded several organisations.  He was the intellectual architect and Chairman of InfraCo, an infrastructure project development company operating in Africa and Asia, the founder Chairman of the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund, an African debt fund, a founder board member of GuarantCo, an infrastructure loan guarantee facility and, until 2013, the Chairman of CEPA, an economic and financial consultancy.  He was Vice Chairman of Rothschild, the international investment bank, and worked for the World Bank and IMF, has held senior positions in the public sector in Tanzania and Papua New Guinea, and was an Honorary Professor at the University of Dundee Centre for Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy.

Other current positions:  Keith is special advisor to the Private Infrastructure Development Group (PIDG), which mobilises private sector investment to develop infrastructure in developing countries and founder and Chair of Enterprise for Development, a UK charity that promotes pro-poor social enterprise in sub-Saharan Africa.

Associate Director

Tom is Associate Director within AgDevCo's Ghana team.  Prior to joining AgDevCo Tom spent five years with McKinsey & Company where, as an Engagement Manager and Sustainability Fellow, he worked on economic development and sustainability projects, primarily in developing countries. This included supporting public and private sector clients in infrastructure finance, energy sector planning, climate change mitigation and water and natural resource management. Tom previously worked in the agriculture sector in Kenya for Technoserve and at Vodafone as a product developer. Tom has a MEng in Engineering from Durham University.

HANNAH RATCLIFFE
Head of Enterprise Development Team

Hannah heads the Enterprise Development Team which provides technical assistance to AgDevCo investees. The Enterprise Development Team works across the AgDevCo portfolio to provide tailored technical advice to develop commercially sustainable businesses. Hannah has more than 6 years’ experience working with African businesses and specialises in unique challenges faced by agri-businesses on the continent. Previously she held the position of Group Management Accountant for AgDevCo being the key interface for financial reporting to major donors and managing the Group’s global audit and tax matters. Having studied Spanish and Business Studies at Newcastle University, Hannah later joined BDO LLP in London and Argentina and earned an ACA. Prior to University, she spent 18 months as a volunteer in Lagos, Nigeria.

Anna Rebollini
Non-Executive Director (Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee)

Anna is an associate of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. Her international experience covers the complete life cycle of a business venture, including the establishment and funding of an agricultural investment company, financial management of operating companies in agriculture and publishing, acquisitions and disposals of quoted and unquoted investments in agriculture and mining and the solvent dissolution of an investment company to return over $300m in cash to shareholders. She has worked with UK, Brazilian, Russian and Canadian companies.  Anna is finance director of Genagro Ltd, a Brazilian agricultural land development business. She was previously finance director of Galahad Gold plc and International Molybdenum plc, both of which were quoted on the AIM Market of the London Stock Exchange. Anna joined AgDevCo’s audit and risk committee in June 2015.

FRANCES REID
Non-Executive Director

Frances has over 35 years of investment experience in developing and developed markets. Most of her work has been in emerging markets, particularly in Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe. Her experience covers a range of financial activities, including corporate finance, private equity, investment management, debt restructuring and development of proprietary financial products. Frances has worked most recently as a Senior Investment and Risk Officer at the Millennium Challenge Corporation, with responsibility for agency-level investment processes, risk management, portfolio analysis and strategic planning. Prior to that, she was a Senior Policy Adviser to the Undersecretary for International Affairs at the U.S. Treasury, having previously spent eight years at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), where she focused on direct investment and corporate finance.
 

Other current positions: Frances is currently the Chief Investment Officer for the CDC Group. In this capacity, she is responsible for managing CDC's investment decision-making process and chairing the Investment Committee.

SANDI ROBERTS
Head of SDU

Sandi leads the work of the Smallholder Development Unit. She is an Agricultural specialist with project management experience in large scale, commercial agriculture and donor funded smallholder initiatives. Her strong private sector and smallholder development experience spans 20 years throughout East and Southern Africa. Sandi began her career at Zimbabwe Fertiliser Company and worked within the Agriculture industry in Zimbabwe with extensive travel into the region. Prior to joining AgDevCo, she managed a highly successful USAID funded program. Sandi holds an MSc degree in Agriculture majoring in Horticulture from the University of Natal, South Africa.

NICK ROUSE

Nick has over 40 years of experience in banking, infrastructure and risk management in sub-Saharan Africa and other emerging markets. Before joining Frontier Markets in 2002, Nick worked for Barclays Bank for 33 years, including running Barclays Corporate Business in East Africa.

 

Other current positions: Nick is the Chairman of the Credit Investment Committee of CDC, and also non-executive director of Frontier Markets Fund Managers, the fund manager of the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund and GuarantCo.

REBECCA SANKAR
Associate Director

Rebecca is an Associate Director and Country Head for Uganda. Rebecca has over 10 years of experience in agri-business and finance in emerging markets. She has held a number of roles at AgDevCo. She set-up our operations in Uganda and is now responsible for originating, executing and managing all the current and potential Ugandan investments and oversees the country team and office. Before focusing on Uganda, she led investments in Malawi and was Portfolio Manager for the Group for three years which included portfolios in West, Southern and East Africa. Prior to AgDevCo, she managed a large rice farming, milling and exporting company in South America, worked for a strategic advisory firm in London and interned with Merrill Lynch in New York. Rebecca has a BBA (Hons) in Finance, and a MSc in Development Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS).

RUI SANT’ANA AFONSO

Rui has significant project management and leadership experience with extensive knowledge of supply chain logistics, safety and international best practice business management. Prior to joining AgDevCo, Rui led the planning, development and operations of the Maputo Port in Mozambique. He was also the Director of Security for G4S Secure Solutions, an agricultural business advisor for TechnoServe and a senior consultant with the ICC.

Selase’s role is to scope and assess SME proposals and associated documentation, and coordinate client training in financial planning, forecasting and reporting. Before joining AgDevCo, Selase worked as Financial Services Facilitator for the USAID-funded ADVANCE programme implemented by ACDI/VOCA.  He was also a Client Advisor for ProCredit Savings and Loans, where he monitored and recovered agricultural loans. Selase holds an MBA in Finance from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi and a BSc Agriculture (Hons) from the University of Ghana, Legon

ISMAIL SENTISSI EL IDRISSI
Senior Investment Manager

Ismail manages AgDevCo’s investments in West Africa and leads AgDevCo's greenfield development at Babator in Ghana. Ismail has over 9 years experience in banking, investment and project management, with an extended period living in Ghana. Prior to joining AgDevCo in 2014, Ismail spent four years with BNP Paribas in Paris, where he was involved in setting up financing for large corporates in the metals and petroleum sectors in Europe and Africa. He previously worked at the World Bank in Washington DC on transportation projects in West Africa. Ismail has a double Masters in Finance from École des Ponts ParisTech and in Energy Economics from IFP School in Paris.
