AgDevCo believes that profitable agriculture with strong links to markets is the best route out of poverty for the majority of Africa's rural poor.

AgDevCo is a social impact investor and agribusiness project developer, incorporated as a non-for-profit distribution, limited company in the UK.  We invest patient capital in the form of debt and equity into early stage agribusinesses and act as promoter or co-promoter of greenfield agriculture opportunities.  AgDevCo currently operates with locally managed subsidiaries in five countries in sub-Saharan Africa (Mozambique, Ghana, Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania).

In these countries, our aim is to reduce rural poverty directly and indirectly by raising agricultural productivity and incomes and creating employment opportunities for rural communities.  In doing so, AgDevCo can make an important contribution to reducing food insecurity, hunger and under-nutrition.

AgDevCo's investment objectives are:
  • To create commercially sustainable agriculture and agribusiness ventures; and,
  • Through these support emergent commercial and small scale farmers to increase productivity and incomes.
We do this through a focus on hub and outgrower farm production and processing; investment in businesses across value chains and in geographical clusters.  We support businesses to the point where they can attract private investment from domestic and overseas investors.

AgDevCo is managed by professionals with extensive agricultural, investment and project development experience in Africa and elsewhere. Management report to a Board of Directors made up of individuals with senior private sector credentials in business, agriculture and finance and in-depth knowledge of development issues in Africa. AgDevCo is funded by private individuals, the Department for International Development (DFID), and Directorate General for International Cooperation (DGIS).  It has also previously received generous support from the Small Foundation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation. AgDevCo is currently in discussions with development finance institutions, and commercial and social impact investors about investment capital for certain portfolio investments in its pipeline.
